NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights Conducting Research on Recruitment as State Department Confirms Recruitment as Source of Migrant Rights Abuse in Gulf

New York – The 2015 Trafficking in Persons report released today by the U.S. Department of State affirms the connection between exploitative recruitment practices for migrant workers from South Asia and human rights abuses in the construction industry in Arabian Gulf countries.

The nature of recruitment and associated business practices represent a critical research gap. The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights has launched a new research project that will examine migrant worker recruitment in the construction sector that will be a resource for companies, governments, and civil society organizations.

“Current business practices in the manpower and construction industries result in exploitation and abuse of workers. Our research is aimed at better understanding the underlying business models that are perpetuating the practices identified in the State Department’s report,” said Sarah Labowitz, co-director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights. ”
